1997 – 2002 – 2005: These annual figures mark three unexplained deaths today. They all occurred at Dessau police station during or immediately after arrest. Every time a prisoner died, who was rar on fringes of society during his lifetime. And every time re was suspicion of ill-treatment by police officers in room. The first, Hans-Jürgen R., was found after his release with severe internal injuries. He died in hospital, investigations were discontinued. The second, homeless Mario B., died of a skull base fracture. Investigations have also been discontinued.
The third and most prominent, Oury Jalloh, an asylum seeker from Sierra Leone, burned in his cell. A second postmortem also found a previous nasal fracture. Investigations on his case run mainly because committed lawyers and supporters have been pushing for more than 12 years. They believe: it was murder.
The senior chief prosecutor changed his mindA single possible homicide by policemen would already be outrageous. At latest, link with two or potential cases – that is, suspicion of structural failure – would be a case for federal prosecutor.
The authorities see it differently. After two lawsuits, several fire analyses and countless reports, y remain in sis that Jalloh had set mselves on fire. At beginning of December, however, ARD Magazine Monitor and central German newspaper revealed that official picture was not as coherent as it was previously thought.
Folker Bittmann, a senior prosecutor in Dessau for a long time and advocates of sis of Selbstanzündung, changed his mind after evaluation of last reset fire 2016.
