When police approached a running vehicle with no lights on, stopped in the middle of the road with four people inside, the officers flashed their lights.
The vehicle took off speeding. It was about 1:20 a.m. in the 7900 block of South Lake Shore Drive, a police spokesman said.
Police didn’t give chase, but they put out a description of the vehicle over the radio, they said. Two to three minutes later, another Chicago Police unit saw the same vehicle — crashed into a fire hydrant.
The driver had taken off on foot; of the three remaining occupants, some had been ejected from the vehicle, police said. The other occupants, two women and a man, were all in their 20s and were all taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center. One of the women later was transferred to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, officials said.
The driver was later arrested, police said, and he was taken to Advocate Trinity Hospital, where he was listed in serious condition, the spokesman said.
No one has been charged and no further information was immediately available, police said.
