MAHWAH — Luxury homes are planned at the former Apple Ridge Golf Course site in Mahwah, the developer announced.

Toll Brothers recently closed on the property and remediation work is expected to begin next month at the site, which is contaminated with lead and arsenic.

“Today, it is not uncommon that builders have to properly deal with environmental issues of some kind. As with many golf courses, sometimes there are pesticides left over from the former golf course operations,” Chris Gaffney, Toll Brothers Group President, said in a statement. “Toll Brothers brings a tremendous amount of national-level experience in order to seamlessly handle these types of clean-ups, and we have successfully managed this process numerous times throughout the state.”

The township previously approved the development and cleanup, which includes plans to blend contaminated soil with clean soil on the 100-acre property until toxins are diluted.

The development will be split into two communities, Orchard Ridge in Mahwah with 34 home sites, and Preserve in Upper Saddle River, with 44 homes sites.

Sales are expected to open in early 2018, the developer said.

Toll Brothers is also developing a 275-home project in Franklin Lakes at the High Mountain Golf Club.
