Arsenal defeated Sutton United in the fifth round of the FA Cup on Monday, in a clinical, no-surprises game where the Premier League side dispatched the upstart.
But the Man of the Match had to be Sutton’s backup goalkeeper Wayne Shaw, who seemed to be everywhere at Gander Green Lane, except in goal.
Shaw, 46, used to work for his uncle as an ice-cream man. He weighs in at about 210 pounds and primarily serves as goalkeeping coach and stadium caretaker who sometimes sleeps at the venue. He’s had offers to pose nude for magazines. He even has his own line of chili sauce, which apparently goes very well with pies. The portly keeper is now extending his reach beyond Britain, going global while becoming the darling of social media and endearing himself to fans who took notice of his charming personality and less-than-average physique during Monday’s internationally-televised game against Arsenal.
Before kickoff, Shaw warmed up by vacuuming the artificial pitch in front of the bench. Here’s a look at a few more of his choice moments from the sidelines and at the stadium during the match:
