CLEVELAND, Ohio — A man slapped an 82-year-old great-grandmother and threatened her with a cord during a home invasion Sunday in Cleveland, police and the woman said.
Investigators have not identified or arrested the man, who also took the woman’s car during the incident that happened on Tarkington Avenue, police said.
Azzie Davis is recovering at home after the attack. Davis, who has two children, six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, is retired after 56 years working as a licensed practical nurse, she said.
Davis was watching the news about 7 p.m. when she heard a knock on her door. When she went to the door, a man stacked a bucket next to a back window and climbed into her home, she said.
The man — who was wearing a hood pulled tight around his face — sneaked behind Davis, grabbed her and pulled her into the living room, she said in an interview.
“I was just shocked,” Davis said.
The man slapped her several times, knocking her to the ground. Davis hit her face as she fell, cutting her nose.
The man shouted at Davis, demanding money, she said.
“I kept telling him I didn’t have any money,” Davis said.
The man then grabbed a cable cord and walked toward her, she said. Davis screamed for help. She told the man she’d called police and that they were on their way.
The man grabbed Davis’ purse from her bedroom and her keys from the top of her TV, Davis said.
He tried to get out the front door, Davis said. When he couldn’t open the door, he left through the back window.
The man stole Davis’ 2000 Buick Century from her driveway and sped off. He drove to the Lee Gas Mart about a mile north on Lee Road, left the car at a gas bump and got picked up by another driver, police said.
She was treated at Marymount Hospital and released.
Davis said her daughter is urging her to move, but she hasn’t made up her mind if she wants to stay in Cleveland.
“I’m hoping they get this guy off the street,” Davis’ granddaughter, Monica Kincaid, said. “This could have ended a lot worse.”
