A 68-year-old man remains in critical condition and a 35-year-old man is in stable condition Monday after they were injured when a car flipped into a crowd at Volusia Speedway Sunday.

A third patient was released from the hospital Monday morning, according to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.

The injuries happened during dirt car races at the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series about 9:30 p.m.

The car crashed through a fence, going into a crowd of people in a pit area near the stands.

The crash happened around turn two of the half-mile track when Dale Blaney and two other drivers got into a crash.

That’s when Blaney’s car flipped and flew through a fence, landing where racegoers had gathered to watch.

Ryan Williams, of Illinois, was in town for the series of races with a group of friends. He said he was sitting on top of a golf cart when he saw Blaney’s car “catapult” into the air, coming straight toward him.

“I’ve never taken off so fast,” said Williams, 41. “I hopped off then looked back and saw it come through the fence. It just leveled the people who were standing there. Completely leveled them.”

He said the car continued rolling after hitting the group so no one was pinned underneath the car.

Blaney crawled out and started cursing, he said.

“You could tell he was just sick to his stomach,” Williams said. “It was a horrible accident. It was no one’s fault. They were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

This is the second time a car flipped from the track in several days.

On Wednesday, another race car driven by Joey Saldana flipped over the 10-foot fence and hit a light pole, according to PennLive.com.

The track is located along State Road 40 near Barberville and De Leon Springs.
