If you were hoping for sunny skies for President’s Day, the National Weather Service is here to dash your hopes with one word: Rain.

Temperatures in the Portland area will reach 50 degrees, but chance of precipitation is 100 percent, the forecast says.

It’s February in the Pacific Northwest. What did you expect?

The weather service is predicting as much as a half an inch of precipitation on the Monday holiday, along with gusts up to 20 mph. Thunderstorms are also possible.

Rain is likely Tuesday and Wednesday, with a chance of rain throughout the rest of the week.

But all is not lost. Clear skies are in the forecast for this weekend, and signs of spring are popping up throughout Portland. So much for Punxsutawney Phil. When crocuses start to bloom, we know spring has arrived.

I spotted these intrepid crocuses in Southeast Portland on Saturday. Happy spring!Anna Marum/The Oregonian
