A group of 12 Don Bosco Prep football players and several assistant coaches showed up at the home of coach Greg Toal Sunday morning to show their support for a coach who built the Ramsey school into a national powerhouse.
It was the first time any of them have seen or spoken with Toal since news broke Thursday morning that the legendary coach retired and was replaced by former Rutgers quarterback and Don Bosco offensive coordinator Mike Teel.
Toal, who has not made any public statements about his retirement, said he will “this week” while standing at his doorstep.
“You can tell in his eyes that he doesn’t really want to leave,” junior defensive end Tyler Friday said. “Hopefully when the smoke clears the truth will come out.”
The group of Don Bosco players brought memorabilia, signs and newspaper clippings from Toal’s office. Toal brought the items into the house and then exchanged hugs and words with each player and his former assistants while walking down the driveway.
“We had to show Coach Toal how much the kids love him and how much we’re thankful for,” said senior defensive lineman Eric Chakonis. “I texted all the football players who are starters or have a special relationship with Coach Toal.”
