NEW CASTLE, Del. — A man jumped from the New Jersey-bound span of the Delaware Memorial Bridge this morning, officials confirmed.

The incident happened shortly after 8 a.m. when a man stopped his vehicle in the right lane at mid-point of the span, according to Delaware River & Bay Authority spokesman Jim Salmon.

The man put on his hazard lights, exited the vehicle and jumped over the side.

The distance from center of the bridge to the water is about 200 feet.

The U.S. Coast Guard and fire units are assisting in the search for the man, Salmon said.

Authorities have not identified the man, but said his vehicle had Maryland tags.

The Delaware Memorial Bridge consists of two spans — one headed to New Jersey and the other to Delaware. About 35 million vehicles cross the bridges annually.
