SALEM — Mayor Charles Washington Jr. announced that the newly established Salem Department of Commerce (SDOC) has organized and conducted its first meeting.

The Salem Department of Commerce is the city’s apex economic development organization and is empowered by law to manage and enforce all city policies, ordinances and intergovernmental relations, relating to commerce, economic and neighborhood development.

The SDOC is the city’s official agency and leader on all grant solicitations, municipal marketing and promotion, public-private partnerships, trade policy, land banking, as well as, business retention and attraction. The SDOC provides business ombudsmen services and serves as a key conduit for stakeholder input on how best to support the City of Salem’s efforts on economic growth.

“The Department of Commerce works with companies, entities, and organizations looking to develop or expand activities and investment in Salem,” Mayor Washington said.

“Attracting job-creating investment has always been a priority for my administration and I look forward to utilizing this economic development tool, along with our Port of Entry, to implement policies and strategies ensuring Salem once again becomes a destination for business investment, development and expansion.”

The SDOC advises the mayor on Salem commerce and economic policies and programs impacting investment and economic development. It identifies and recommends programs and policies that help Salem attract and retain business development and investment.

“The importance of this department to the city cannot be taken for granted. This department is the next step in the realization of long range sustainable fiscal practices for government and quality of life improvements for Salem’s residents,” Mayor Washington said. “I have asked that City Council President Karen Roots with her understanding of both the private and public sectors serve as the inaugural executive director.”
