TYLER, Texas (AP) — An East Texas jail inmate on suicide watch while awaiting trial on a capital murder charge climbed the basketball hoop in the jail recreation yard and resisted efforts to get him down.

A Smith County sheriff’s spokesman says Gustavo Zavala-Garcia was finally removed after he spent 30 minutes looking for an exit through the roof of the Tyler jail’s indoor exercise yard and punching anyone trying to take hold of him.

Zavala-Garcia is accused of killing Kayla Gomez-Orozco, whose body was found in a well on a rural property where Zavala-Garcia had been living in November.
