NORTH GREENBUSH — Police and utility crews on Friday evening were on the scene of a water-main break and sinkhole on Glenmore Road just off Route 4.

For several hours starting at 5 p.m. water geysered in a high arc onto trees in a nearby ravine, and a 5-foot-diameter hole had opened on the edge of the road, according to police on the scene.

The site, just south of Hudson Valley Community College, is behind a Stewart’s shop, and traffic did not appear to be seriously affected.

The pipe that broke, a 36-inch water main, serves East Greenbush and Rensselaer.

East Greenbush water department crews were expected to come to repair the break, said North Greenbush building inspector Mike Miner, who was on the scene with police.

East Greenbush residents are asked to restrict water use until further notice.

Because of the site of the break and the direction of the spray, the geyser, though dramatic to witness, could have been much worse on a below-freezing winter’s night had it happened elsewhere, Miner said.

Water was shooting across a small retaining pond and into a ravine. Townhouses under development up the hill from the ravine are not yet occupied, Miner said.
