Cyrus faces his ultimate challenge but continues to stop at nothing to prove his innocence. Meanwhile, Olivia and the gladiators uncover shocking new evidence about the night Frankie was shot. Here’s a recap of “Scandal” season 6 , episode 4, “The Belt.”
Cyrus – who has been convicted of killing president-elect Frankie Vargas — arrives at prison, where he is kept in solitary for his own protection. Cyrus gets a guard to give him pen and paper so he can write a letter to Tom, whose testimony put Cyrus in prison. Fitz and the attorney general agree that Cyrus could face the death penalty for assassinating a president.
Mellie and Olivia do a victory dance, because Mellie is about to be the leader of the free world. But Olivia knows it’s not a done deal until Mellie is sworn in.
Michael visits Cyrus in prison to deliver the news that he is divorcing Cyrus and getting full custody of their daughter Ella. Michael has seen the letter that Cyrus wrote to Tom, and Michael is disgusted by the letter’s sexual innuendo.
A guard allows Cyrus a few minutes in the prison yard at night, but it’s an opportunity for other inmates to attack him. Cyrus hallucinates that Michael and Olivia are his supporters again, Tom recanted and Cyrus is sworn in as president to the crowd’s cheers.
Cyrus walks into the Oval. Mellie meets him there, sitting behind her desk. “I don’t want your blood on my carpet,” she says. Yes, the happy times were all a dream. Actually, Cyrus is bleeding while lying on the ground in the prison yard.
Olivia’s cell phone rings; it’s a call from Cyrus, who is banged up but alive. He pleads with Olivia to believe his innocence, but she won’t help him. Cyrus fears he will die in prison. “Cyrus, at some point the bill has to be paid. Your time is up,” Olivia says. “I will always be your friend, but I will not speak to you again.”
Back at the prison, it seems as if Cyrus intends to hang himself with a belt. But he gives the belt to a murderous prisoner, who overtakes a guard and grabs the cell keys. Cyrus and Mr. Murder head for Tom’s cell, where Mr. Murder starts choking Tom. Tom sputters that both Tom and Cyrus are innocent (as Olivia’s people confirm that Tom wasn’t in town when Frankie was shot). Tom framed Cyrus just to see him suffer.
Cyrus, realizing that his salvation is at hand, orders Mr. Murder to let Tom live. Tom and Cyrus are innocent!
