MAYFIELD VILLAGE, Ohio

Traffic stop, Interstate-271:

After stopping a vehicle for speeding Feb. 9, the driver said he was doing so because his brother had been shot in Bedford. Officers checked with Bedford and Bedford Heights police. Neither could confirm a report of a shooting. The driver was cited for speeding and willful wanton disregard for safety. He had been clocked at 100 miles-per-hour.

Fraud, Beta Drive:

Employees of a business reported Feb. 7 an email was received that was supposedly from the company’s owner and requesting a transfer of money to an investment company. A total of $97,000 was wired as requested, but the staff later learned the email was fraudulent. They requested the bank stop the wire transfer. The incident is under investigation.

Fraud, Lander Road:

A resident reported Feb. 7 he had received a message on his computer that it was at risk and someone was attempting to access it. He called a phone number he was instructed to call and was told by an unknown male that two security programs, costing $900, needed to be installed on the computer. He made partial payment and then later paid the balance by providing the male with redemption codes for iTunes gift cards. He later found out his computer was still having problems and he had been a victim of a scam.

Fraud, Sandalwood Drive:

A woman reported Feb. 8 she received a credit card in the mail that she did not apply for and then later learned there were fraudulent charges on two of her own credit card accounts. Those charges are being disputed and the companies are investigating the fraud.

Theft, Wilson Mills Road:

An employee at the Wildcat Sport & Fitness Center said Feb. 9 some stole his cell phone while he was at work. The phone was later located in the garbage.

Theft, North Commons Boulevard:

A catalytic converter was reported Feb. 10 to have been stolen off a vehicle that was parked on the Progressive Insurance property. The vehicle was said to have been parked in the same location since Feb. 6.

Drug offense, Wilson Mills Road:

A student at Mayfield High School was said Feb. 13 to have been in possession of blotting papers with an unknown substance on them. The boy said the papers did not contain any type of drug. Possible charges are pending the outcome of lab tests. The school staff was informed of the incident from someone from the Rocky River school district.
