ST. PETERSBURG — Police are looking for two young males after one briefly stole a sport-utility vehicle with an infant strapped into the backseat on Wednesday, according to St. Petersburg police.

The child’s father arrived at his residence at 5122 39th St. S after 9 a.m. with his infant daughter buckled into a car seat in a 2016 Lexus SUV, police said. The father left the vehicle’s car’s engine running and went inside to put mail in the house.

Meanwhile, police said, a white four-door car pulled up outside the house and a young man got out, ran up to the house, got into the running SUV and drove off — with the baby in the backseat. The white car sped off as well.

The SUV didn’t get far, police said, as the young male discovered the baby in the vehicle and abandoned it a few blocks away at 53rd Avenue S and 41st Streer S. He escaped in the white car, police said. The child was not hurt.

Police said the two men are in their late teens or early 20s. Anyone with information about these two young males or the white sedan is asked to call St. Petersurg police at (727) 893-7780 or text SPPD+ along with the tip to TIP411.
