Four Senate Republicans have told GOP leaders they won’t support President Trump’s nominee for labor secretary — raising the possibility there won’t be enough votes to confirm him, it was reported Wednesday.
Republicans control the Senate by a 52-48 margin.
But with the four defections, confirmation of fast-food executive Andrew Puzder is threatened, CNN reported citing several sources.
Sens. Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Tim Scott of South Carolina and Johnny Isakson of George have told GOP leaders they won’t back Puzder, CNN said.
No Democrats are expected to support Puzder.
So Republicans would have to persuade at least two of the four to change their minds.
Puzder’s hearing, delayed several times, is now scheduled for Thursday.
Murkowski and Collins also withheld their support for Trump’s choice of Betsy DeVos for Education Secretary. She eventually won confirmation after Vice President Mike Pence cast his vote to break a 50-50 tie.
Puzder’s nomination has been troubled by his admission that he didn’t pay taxes on an undocumented worker in his household and allegations that he threatened his ex-wife when she made abuse allegations.
