SAN ANTONIO — A day after a massive manhunt locked down areas around North Star Mall, police and federal officials announced Wednesday that they have made 3 arrests in connection with a crime spree that began with the shooting of a mail carrier in Spring Branch.

San Antonio Police Department Chief William McManus said a SWAT team, acting on information they received Tuesday night, arrested the three suspects at the Sunset Inn Motel at the intersection of Roosevelt and Steves Avenue.

“There was a relatively complicated saga between the shooting and today,” McManus said.

McManus did not detail the charges the suspects will face, as the U.S. Postal Inspector is the primary agency handling the case, and they will issue the charges.

Two of the suspects were men and the other was a woman. According to McManus, they were arrested without incident, despite being “very, very dangerous.”

Police believe the crime spree began Saturday, when the trio allegedly shot a mail carrier in Spring Branch and then stole the carrier’s vehicle, which was later recovered.

Monday a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper spotted a driver headed southbound in the northbound lanes on U.S. Highway 281 near Bulverde Road.

The trooper said he believed the driver fired off one gunshot at him as he passed. Officials believe the driver was one of the suspects in the mail carrier shooting.

Tuesday police responded to an individual who said his mail was stolen. Officers then tracked the suspects to the Jim’s Restaurant near Loop 410 and Broadway.

According to police at the scene, one of the suspects fired at officers, and then fled into the North Star Mall.

A massive manhunt was initiated, but the suspects escaped police once again.

After almost five days on the loose, the suspects were arrested on probable cause affidavits Wednesday morning.

McManus said he didn’t know whether any other suspects will be arrested in connection with the case.
