RILEY TOWNSHIP, Ohio — A Parma man faces charges stemming from a high-speed pursuit with police through several counties, authorities said.

Steven S. Michel, 40, faces charges of fleeing and eluding, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, no operator’s license and fictitious plates, according to a news release from the State Highway Patrol.

The incident happened shortly after 7 p.m. Monday at the Commodore Perry Service Plaza on the Ohio Turnpike in Sandusky County just west of Yorktown Road, according to the news release.

A Milan Post trooper noticed Michel had a license plate that didn’t belong to the car he was driving, according to the highway patrol. Michel sped away eastbound on the turnpike in the 2000 Acura TI while the trooper was stood outside the car, according to the news release

Michel got off the turnpike at Ohio 4 and continued south at a high rate of speed, police said. He turned west on U.S. 20 and drove through Bellevue and Clyde, according to the news release said.

Troopers placed spike strips along U.S. 20, but they were ineffective, according to the news release.

Michel exited U.S. 20 at the U.S. 6 Fremont exit and fled west toward Fremont, troopers said. Law enforcement officials called off the pursuit because of the speed and the risk to the public, the news release said.

An Ottawa County sheriff deputy spotted Michel headed northbound on Ohio 19. The deputy couldn’t stop Michel and ended the pursuit.

Michel was eventually found parked in a driveway in Ottawa County. He was arrested and taken to Sandusky County jail. A female passenger was arrested and later released without charges, according to the news release.
