CLEVELAND, Ohio — Call it farm-fresh living, without a complete move to the farm. Take a look at some of this year’s community supported agriculture programs (CSAs) and you can’t help but get hungry for pastured eggs and their deep-yellow, flavorful yolks. Or greens so recently picked, they’re still standing erect in your share bag. Or meat and dairy items that taste like food with the word “industry” – and their processes – removed.
Anyone who shops a true farmers market knows the benefits of getting closer to the farm. CSAs take you that much closer, since the early sign-up gives farmers the money to get the season started, and to know how much to grow. It also starts a relationship between consumer and farmer that often involves cooking ideas and visits to the farm.
Memberships come with risk, of course. Who knows how the weather will treat crops? By joining, you lock arms with the farmer in that risk. After experiencing four programs, we can say many growers are more than happy to make sure you still get your fair share.
Here’s how to start: Take a look at the farms in our list. Don’t worry so much about where they’re located as where they deliver. Is it convenient to you? Then consider what they offer. Do you want organic? We list growing practices. Finally, consider the price.
Still not completely sure about a farm? Ask to talk to previous members. Or, buy retail from the farm or get a small share to try it out.
You just might find a stronger connection to the land.
