The driver of a stolen truck has been arrested and accused of fleeing the scene after striking a child on a bicycle Tuesday in east Orange County, authorities said.
The crash happened about 4:10 p.m. near the intersection of North Dean Road and River Park Boulevard, north of State Road 50, Fire Rescue spokeswoman Chelsea Ryan said.
The driver lost control of the vehicle and flipped over, striking a young girl riding a bicycle, said Sgt. Kim Montes, a Florida Highway Patrol spokeswoman.
The man got out of the truck and ran away after the crash, but an Orange County Sheriff’s Office K-9 caught him in a wooded area nearby, Montes said.
Troopers said the man had warrants out for his arrest, and the truck and its license tags were stolen.
“The tags didn’t even belong to the vehicle,” Montes said.
The Fire Department took the girl as a “trauma alert” patient to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, Ryan said. Her mother and grandmother are with her at the hospital, Montes said.
She is in critical but stable condition, Montes said.
Traffic was slowed in the area as first responders worked the crash scene. Troopers are still investigating, Ryan said.
