CLEVELAND, Ohio — Veterans who are currently inpatients of the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center’s Community Living Center renewed their wedding vows with spouses to celebrate Valentine’s Day in poignant and quietly powerful ways.
Nine couples came forward, the husbands in wheelchairs with one exception, in the hospital’s Chapel to recite vows expressing their mutual love despite the illnesses and disabilities of age that brought them to the facility.
The hospital chaplain, a rabbi, and a priest presided over the ceremony.
Following the renewal of vows, a reception was held with every couple receiving their own small cake.
The Vow Renewal Ceremony is one of several events and activities taking place at the VA Medical Center in recognition of National Salute to Veteran Patients Week, Feb. 13-17.
