BAYONNE — McCabe Ambulance personnel took home top honors from the New Jersey Statewide Conference on EMS, an emergency medical services competition in Atlantic City.
Certified emergency medical technicians Amber Henderson, 23, and Russel Cahn, 25, took first place in the competition earlier this month, which focused on how a team of first responders would react in various emergency situations.
The teammates practiced treating trauma and cardiac arrest victims, and responding to other medical scenarios.
The organizers did not say what those circumstances would be, so participants had to be prepared for anything.
“We tried to come up with things that would throw us for a loop,” Cahn said.
“Basically, we did everything we know how to do, but we did it repeatedly,” Henderson added. “We did it until it was effortless, that you didn’t have to think about it; that you know how to do it, and when to do it.”
The duo went through two stages of emergency work, which featured a variety of different scenarios — from an elderly male with chest pains, to an “active shooter in a night club.”
“You didn’t expect that. I don’t think any one of us did,” Henderson said. “We looked at each other and I think we thought, ‘I don’t know how we’re going to do this.'”
But the team made it through with flying colors — with an audience of 100 people watching their every move.
Teams from Jersey City Medical Center and Hackensack University Medical Center came in second and third place, respectively.
Henderson and Cahn won a trophy and individual medals. They will defend their title at next year’s conference.
McCabe, a CarePoint Health partner, often transports patients to CarePoint Health Bayonne Medical Center. Officials from the hospital chain applauded the achievements of the McCabe EMTs,
“Amber and Russell personify who the employees of McCabe are, and what we do here,” Michael McCabe, McCabe Ambulance’s chief of operations, said in a statement. “They also show the high level of proficiency needed to save lives and help injured people.”
CarePoint officials also applauded the achievements of the McCabe EMTs, citing the ongoing partnership between the hospital chain and the ambulance company.
