Every good story has a beginning, middle and end.
For me, endings are the hardest part.
I’ve written more than 8,000 stories for the Times Union since I arrived in 1984, roughly 8 million words. Nobody ever accused me of writing too short.
The best writing advice I ever got was from Tracy Kidder at the Nieman Conference on Narrative Journalism at Harvard University some 20 years ago. “Find a good story,” Kidder said, “and get out of the way.”
It’s a hell of a lot harder than it sounds.
