PENNSVILE TWP. —  A thief cut a hole in a security fence and took copper wire worth more than $3,000, police say.

James R. Afelis has been charged with stealing cooper wire, authorities say. (Salem County Correctional Facility)

James R Afelis, 36, of Quinton was charged with burglary, theft and criminal mischief, according to Pennsville Chief of Police Allen J. Cummings.

Just past 8:30 a.m. on Feb. 5, police were called to the Calpine property on North Broadway for the report of a theft.

Officers found that a security fence surrounding the Atlantic City Electric utility yard on the property had been cut and approximately 1,300 feet of copper wire, valued at $3,250 had been stolen.

Cummings said police determined that the wire had allegedly been taken by Afelis to a scrap yard in Brooklawn and sold.

After his arrest, Afelis was taken to the Salem County Correctional Facility, Mannington Township, where he remained Tuesday.
