A 17-year-old Waukegan boy is in custody at a juvenile detention facility after his arrest on allegations he robbed clerks at two pharmacies Friday while armed with a box cutter.

The armed robberies were among four reported in Waukegan over the weekend. The others, believed to involve different suspects, took place at gas stations Friday and Sunday, respectively, police said.

The teen was arrested Friday night, a short time after authorities say he robbed the Walgreens on the 700 block of North Green Bay Road about 8:35 p.m. That holdup occurred about seven hours after the same teen, according to police, robbed the CVS at 10 S. Lewis Ave. Money was taken in both holdups.

A patrol officer spotted the juvenile after the Walgreens robbery and took him into custody, police said. He is charged with robbery in both cases and was turned over to the Depke Juvenile Detention Facility in Vernon Hills, according to police.

Police continue to search for suspects in the robberies of gas station clerks at gunpoint Friday and Sunday.

At about 10 p.m. Friday, police said, officers responded to the Citgo gas station on the 2200 block of North Lewis Avenue for a reported armed robbery. The clerk told officers three men entered the business and one showed a black handgun before taking money and leaving on foot.

The armed man was described as a black man in his 20s, standing 5 feet, 8 inches tall, with a thin build, wearing a gray hoodie with blue sleeves and white jeans. The hoodie was up and the suspect was wearing sunglasses.

A second man was described as a black man in his 20s, 5 feet, 8 inches tall, thin build, wearing a gray hoodie with the word “Chicago” printed on it over a picture of the Chicago skyline and blue jogging pants. The third man was wearing all dark clothing and a dark-colored zip-up hoodie, police said.

On Sunday, officers responded about 6 p.m. to the Citgo gas station on the 1000 block of Golf Road for a robbery. The clerk told police that a man entered the business, showed a silver handgun and took money before leaving.

He was described as a black man, wearing a black jacket with a patch on the right shoulder, blue hoodie and black pants.

Anyone with information on either robbery is asked to call the Waukegan Police Department’s Tip-Line at (847) 360-9001.
