A Mt. Lebanon woman was struck and killed by a vehicle Friday night on Interstate 79 near the Kirwan Heights exit in Collier, authorities said.
Katie Musick, 40, died at 6:52 p.m., about 10 minutes after she was struck, according to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office.
Musick was a distant relative of noted sports reporter Phil Musick, according to her mother, Marlene Musick.
“She was a good person,” Marlene Musick said when reached by phone Saturday morning. “She was so likeable, so funny. She liked reading and skiing. She was very outdoorsy.”
The incident occurred about 6:41 p.m. in the southbound lanes of I-79, authorities said. The family does not know the circumstances that led to the accident, but Marlene Musick said she believes she crashed her car on the way to a friend's home and was struck when she got out to check the damage.
The Medical Examiner's Office said Katie Musick died from blunt force injuries to the head, neck, torso and extremities. Her death was ruled an accident.
Katie Musick graduated from Upper St. Clair High School in 1994 and studied at the University of Vermont. She was unemployed when she died, her mother said.
Katie Musick leaves behind a 13-year-old son. Marlene Musick said she will raise the boy.
Traffic reduced to one lane for hours while state police investigated, according to Tribune-Review news partner WPXI-TV.
