A San Antonio police officer was hospitalized early Friday after a drunken driver crashed into him as he responded to an accident in the North Side.

According to Ofc. Douglas Green, a spokesman for the San Antonio Police Department, the officer’s vehicle was rear-ended by a Chevy truck around 1 a.m. near Loop 410 and U.S. Highway 281.

“The officer was inside of his patrol car at the time of impact and sustained injuries to his head, neck, back and leg,” Greene said in a written statement.

The officer was transported to North Central Baptist hospital in stable conditions.

The pickup truck driver, who has yet to be identified, was not injured in the accident. Officers responding to the scene discovered he was intoxicated at the time of the incident, Greene said.

He was arrested on a drunken driving charge.
