About 240 students at Mother of Sorrows School in Murrysville were evacuated Thursday after a report of smoke in the building.

A socket in one of the rooms malfunctioned and began smoking about 12:40 p.m., according to Westmoreland County emergency dispatchers.

“Everyone is safe and accounted for. We will be transporting the students to an auditorium at Franklin Regional High School nearby where they will be dismissed,” said Jerry Zufelt, spokesman for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Greensburg.

Zufelt said the Murrysville Volunteer Fire Department was investigating the cause and extent of the electrical malfunction.

The school has students in pre-school through eighth grade and is located at 3264 Evergreen Drive.
