SAN ANTONIO — About a dozen fire units responded to the scene of a reported blaze at a downtown detention facility Thursday before crews discovered the source of the fire.

According to Joe Arrington, a spokesman for the San Antonio Fire Department, a microwave short circuited on the 8th floor of the Wackenhut Detention Center in 200 block of South Laredo Street.

The first units responded to the call at 11:38 a.m., and by noon at least 15 units were involved, according to the San Antonio Fire Department’s active fires tool.

At 12:10 p.m. authorities had largely cleared the scene.

Arrington said the microwave was probably in a jailer’s rest area.

“I don’t think inmates have access to microwaves,” Arrington said.

The detention center is contracted by the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office.
