A former Northampton County assistant district attorney is running for the Bethlehem-area seat of retiring District Judge James Narlesky.

Hanover Township resident and local attorney Vivian I. Zumas hopes to replace Narlesky, who has been on the bench since 2005. His district encompasses the 14th ward in Bethlehem and Hanover Township, Northampton County.
A Bethlehem native, Zumas has been practicing law for more than 16 years in the region and she currently has a Main Street office in Bethlehem, where she handles divorce, custody, landlord-tenant, civil, criminal, DUI and traffic cases.
Northampton County District Attorney John Morganelli hired Zumas as an assistant district attorney in 2006. She’s also served as a county public defender.
Zumas says she would bring knowledge, integrity and experience to the bench.
“To many, district court could be considered the most important court in Pennsylvania because more citizens have contact with a district court than all other courts combined,” Zumas said in a news release. “The district court deals with cases that have a great impact on the daily lives of our neighbors and their families.”

Zumas said she’s demonstrated a commitment to public services in her career, both prosecuting criminals and defending clients.
“District court is truly a people’s court which requires both knowledge of the law and a true sense of justice and fairness toward all who come before it,” Zumas said.
Zumas attended Bethlehem Catholic High School and graduated from DeSales University in 1997. She graduated from Widener University School of Law in 2000 and is licensed to practice in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and the U.S. Supreme Court.
She is married to fellow attorney George S. Nassif. The couple has two children, Anthony, 8, and Lambros, 4, and they’ve lived in Hanover since 2010.
Zumas is a member of the Hanover Township Planning Commission, the Hanover Elementary School PTA and an adjunct professor in DeSales University’s ACCESS programs.
Zumas announced her candidacy on Jan. 25 at Prime Steak House to a crowd of supporters.
Former Bethlehem City Councilman and attorney Michael Recchiuti announced Wednesday that he is also running for the seat.
Pennsylvania’s primary election is May 16. Candidates can begin circulating nomination petitions in February.
