CLEVELAND, Ohio — The 19-year-old man killed Monday in a crash on his dirt bike was part of the city’s growing Bike Life culture.

Toni Thomas, 19, died in the crash about 7 p.m. on East 93rd Street and Raymond Avenue in the city’s Kinsman neighborhood.

Thomas was struck by two different cars at the intersection, according to police reports. He was taken to University Hospitals, where he died.

The other drivers stayed at the scene and were not injured or arrested, police said.

Thomas was a relatively new rider in the city’s growing dirt bike culture, who was riding on his own at the time instead of in packs, which is more typical, riders said.

He is the second young dirt bike rider to be killed while riding on city streets in the past month.

Cordell Jackson, 17, was killed Jan. 13 while riding an ATV on East 149th Street and Bartlett Avenue. He was also hit by a car.

Cleveland City Council in a contentious meeting approved a $2.3 million dirt bike track to be built in the city’s Garden Valley neighborhood.

The plan, spearheaded by Mayor Frank Jackson, in part aims to give dirt bike riders a place to ride and do stunts somewhere other than in the streets for their own safety and the safety of other drivers.
