CLEVELAND, Ohio — A Lorain man is accused of raping a Cleveland woman who managed to call a friend for help while she was being assaulted, records say.

Brian Taylor, 41, is charged with first-degree rape.

He appeared for arraignment Monday, according to court records. A Cleveland Municipal Court judge set his bond at $100,000, ordered him to have no contact with the victim and bound his case over to a Cuyahoga County grand jury.

Taylor entered the woman’s Superior Avenue apartment sometime between 9:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. Saturday, police say. He then removed her clothes and raped her, according to court records.

During the assault, the woman used her cellphone to call a male friend for help, records say.

The friend arrived to find Taylor hitting the woman and putting her in a chokehold, records say.

Police arrested Taylor about 10:30 p.m. that night on suspicion of rape and burglary, jail records say.

He was held in jail overnight and formally charged on Sunday, records say.

Taylor’s criminal history in Cuyahoga County spans two decades and includes multiple convictions for drug possession, trafficking and assault. He pleaded no contest to an attempted burglary and theft charge in 2008, as well as attempted felonious assault in 2016, records say.
