Bob Costas, who has been the primetime host of every Olympic Games broadcast by NBC since 1992, is stepping down.
Mike Tirico will take over, starting with the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea. He was NBC’s daytime host for last year’s Olympics in Brazil.
Costas, 64, has won 27 Emmy Awards, more than any sports broadcaster in history, and has been on the coverage team for 11 Olympics, summer and winter, in his 37-year career.
He will continue to work in a variety of roles with NBC Sports and NBC News.
“They’ve been kind enough to call it the Brokaw phase of my career, so I’ll be to sports what Tom has been for the last several years to (NBC) News,” Costas said. “I’ll show up when it’s appropriate for me to show up, including sometimes on the Olympics or the Kentucky Derby or the Super Bowl.”
Tirico, 50, was a sports anchor at ESPN for 25 years, including a 10-year run doing play-by-play “Monday Night Football” before to NBC last year.
