Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said Carmelo Anthony shouldn’t waive his no-trade clause for just any team, but the Clippers and Cavaliers “would be ideal” for his former pupil.
The Knicks have approached the Clippers, Cavaliers and Celtics about a potential trade before the Feb. 23 deadline.
“I think it depends on what team,” Boeheim said Wednesday on “Schein on Sports” on SiriusXM Mad Dog Sports Radio. “If I was him, I wouldn’t waive it to just go to some team, no, I wouldn’t do that.”
Of the Clippers and Cavaliers, Boeheim said: “I think they would be ideal. But I don’t know if that can be worked out. I hope it can.
“The Clippers can’t beat the Warriors right now. They proved they’re losing by 30 to them. So maybe he could help them. I know he could help the Cavs. I just don’t know what they’re going to give up to get him, or if they have anything to give up to get him.”
Jackson’s distaste for Anthony is officially on the record after his controversial tweet Tuesday in which he endorsed an article critical of the Knicks star and compared him to NBA bust Michael Graham, who played for Jackson with the Albany Patroons in the CBA in 1986-87.
Boeheim said he believes it looks like a lost cause for the Knicks, and the blame shouldn’t just be on Anthony, who led Syracuse to its lone NCAA title, in 2003. The Knicks enter Wednesday night’s Clippers game in 12th place in the Eastern Conference at 22-31, though they are just 2 1/2 games out of playoff position.
“I think they have to make a move,” Boeheim said. “It’s just not going anywhere. I think [Anthony] is playing as well as he can play, but they can’t go anywhere. I’d love to see him get an opportunity to play with somebody that could win. He’s got a couple, two, three really good years left. I’d love to see him, he loves New York, he’s tried everything he can to help New York win. They just haven’t been able to put a good team together. Obviously he gets the blame for it — that’s what happens when you get paid the most money — but there’s a lot of blame to go around in New York.”
