A man was killed Wednesday morning when his vehicle swerved off an Interstate 5 exit ramp and into an icy retention pond in Federal Way, the Washington State Patrol reports.

Emergency crews responded to the scene, at the 320th Street exit ramp from southbound I-5, at about 5:30 a.m. after receiving reports of a vehicle plunging into a pond there.

Divers found a vehicle under the water and pulled out a victim, who was pronounced dead at the scene. He was later identified as a Yakima resident. His name was withheld pending notification of his next of kin.

It was not immediately clear if anyone else was in the vehicle with him. Divers continued to search the pond, which was covered with floating slabs of ice.

The circumstances leading up to the accident are under investigation.

The 320th Street exit ramp is partially blocked at the scene, causing a backup in the southbound lanes of I-5.
