A man was in custody Tuesday after he walked into a Near North Side school playground and battered several students during a fight, authorities said.
The 46-year-old man was being questioned after the 11 a.m. attack at Ogden School, 24 W. Walton St., officials said.
The man went into the school’s playground while students were outside at recess and got into “an altercation with three students,” according to a letter sent to parents by Odgen Principal Michael Beyer and Cara Krantz, head of the school’s East Campus. Recess monitors stopped the man and school security got him out of the playground, according to the letter.
Police were called and the man was arrested. Charges were pending against him, according to police.
The students suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene, according to a police media notification.
The school has changed some of its policies because of the attack, and gates to the playground will be closed during school hours, according to the letter. At least one employee will be kept near the gates during recess, and parents and visitors are being asked not to go in the playground during school hours, according to the letter.
