Dozens of farm animals perished in a Somerset County barn fire early Tuesday, according to fire officials.

A cow, a calf and approximately 30 chickens and 15 rabbits were inside the Summit Township barn when it burned, said Kenny Brant, assistant fire chief of Garrett fire department. Two tractors were destroyed.

“It was completely on the ground when we got there,” Brant said of the barn. “There wasn't much we could do.”

Brant said the structure was a “total loss.”

The blaze was reported at 12:39 a.m. Tuesday along Phillippi Road in a rural part of the county, south of Somerset. A state police fire marshal is investigating.
