Sacramento center DeMarcus “Boogie” Cousins’ talents have always been noticeable to those who have watched him play.
But the former Kentucky standout doesn’t receive as much national notoriety as he probably deserves because of his celebrated temper tantrums on the court.
Cousins had another meltdown for the ages Monday night in the final seconds of the Kings’ 112-107 home loss to Chicago Monday night. Cousins unsuccessfully claimed he had been held by Dewayne Wade on an inbounds play.
NBA rules mandate a player gets an automatic one-game suspension after 16 technicals and another game afterwards for every other technical a player receives.
Cousins’ two technicals last night pushed him to the limit, likely meaning he won’t be in the Kings’ lineup Wednesday night against Boston.
The date of his suspension, when it will be announced later this afternoon, in the fastest in NBA history that a player has had to sit out.
The rule was implemented before the 2005-06 season. Here’s a list of players who have previously been suspended, according to a historical database of suspensions compiled by NBA analystPatricia Bender.
Dwight Howard 2010-11, March 5.
Rasheed Wallace 2006-07, March 10.
Stephen Jackson 2008-09, March 16.
Rasheed Wallace 2006-07, March 24.
DeMarcus Cousins 2015-16, March 31.
Dwight Howard 2010-11, April 7.
DeMarcus Cousins 2013-14, April 14.
Blake Griffin 2013-14, April 16.
He’s got history on his side as he breaks the previous league record by nearly a month.
Cousins also will break the league record for the third suspension of his career for the rule, a mark he currently shares with Dwight Howard and Rasheed Wallace.
But owing to the quick burst of his temper, we likely will see other suspensions for Cousins as the season continues.
At least, if he doesn’t decide to take a chill pill or two along the way.
It also could provide the Spurs with two chances to miss facing Cousins if he’s out of the lineup. San Antonio will host the Kings on March 8 and March 19.
