A suspicious situation early Tuesday afternoon at the post office in Wind Gap led to the evacuation of nearby homes, the closing of a main road and the arrival of the Bethlehem Fire Department bomb squad, authorities report.
A white man about 5 feet 3 inches tall with black hair and facial scruff who was wearing a red flannel shirt buttoned all the way up and a baseball cap pulled down over his eyes arrived about noon at the post office at 138 N. Broadway, Slate Belt Regional police Chief David Mettin said.

The man, who appeared to be 35 to 45 years old, was holding a package that was about 12 by 12 inches and 4 inches deep, Mettin said. The package had writing on it, the chief added.
After about a half hour “lingering” in the post office, the man put the package on a counter and “charged” out of the building, Mettin said.
Police were called at 12:23 p.m. and cleared nearby homes and shut North Broadway from Route 512 to Constitution Avenue, he said.
A command center was set up with the fire department, borough EMS and postal inspectors. The bomb squad arrived just before 2 p.m. and was suiting up to go into the post office, Mettin said.
The man didn’t appear to get into a vehicle after he left and there was no video system inside the post office, Mettin said.
