It is with sadness and frustration that I read this article. While I firmly agree the police should be held to a high standard of conduct and accountability, I do not agree that they are the cause of this problem. The coverage of this story misses the main point: helping this child.
The mother is understandably upset and shaken because her child was restrained by police. This child had been suspended for violence four times prior to this incident and the mother received “no explanation?” A child exhibiting violent behaviour is calling out for help. The mother’s energy is misdirected at blaming police, who were called after the situation had already deteriorated. Her energy would be better used to find out details about the incident and to recruit available resources from school and/or community to help her child.
Calling this incident a case of racism by police is an abdication of responsibility.
