A 29-year-old man has been charged in a shooting at a Royal Farms store in South Baltimore last month, Baltimore police said Tuesday.

Warrant Apprehension detectives arrested Dallas Evans on Monday for the fatal shooting of 33-year-old Dontia Akins on Jan. 27.

Police said the shooting occurred around 7:39 p.m. outside the Royal Farms in the 1800 block of Washington Boulevard in Carroll Park. An officer in the area heard gunfire and found Akins, and saw a vehicle attempting to speed away from the scene. Police managed to stop the vehicle and the occupants were detained for questioning.

Akins was taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he was pronounced dead a short time later, police said.

Attempts to reach his family Tuesday morning were unsuccessful.

Evans, of the 4500 block of Cedar Garden Road, is charged with first-degree murder. He was taken to the Central Booking and Intake Center. He did not have an attorney listed in online court records.
