WESTLAKE, Ohio – Westlake High School junior Patrick Lee scored a perfect 36 on a recent ACT exam, which is something few students accomplish.

“In general, less than one-tenth of 1 percent of students who take the ACT earn a composite score of 36,” ACT spokesman Ed Colby said. “So, it is a rare and very strong academic achievement.”

The average ACT composite score among Ohio graduates was 22.0 in 2016, and the average score nationally was a 20.8.

Lee said he used the Princeton Review book and took practice tests to prepare for the exam.

He hasn’t decided on a college to attend, but he is interested in studying engineering and science.

At Westlake High School, Lee participates in Academic Challenge, band, cross country, Leadership Challenge, Science Olympiad, and swimming. He is involved in Boy Scouts and has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.

The ACT is a curriculum-based achievement test that measures the skills that are taught in school and needed for success in first-year college courses. Students who earn a 36 composite score are typically those who took challenging courses in school and worked hard to master the material in them, Colby said.

About 1.8 million students annually take the ACT. The college readiness test evaluates reading, math and science skills.
