Thousands of people were without power Monday morning as Seattle City Light reported dozens of outages Monday morning after snow blanketed the region.

Outages in North Seattle, West Seattle and the Tukwila area left thousands without power as the sun rose over a snow-covered city. As of 7:25 a.m., nearly 6,000 customers were still without power.

The largest outage appeared to be centered on Lake Forest Park, where a tree had knocked out power to 1,700 customers. Another large outage was reported in Shoreline near Shorewood High School.

Hundreds of customers appeared to be without power in West Seattle’s Delridge neighborhood as well. According to the utility’s outage map, service was expected to be restored by 11 a.m.

Residents are cautioned not to use grills or gas-powered portable heaters inside their homes. Carbon monoxide poisoning has turned deadly in the Northwest in recent years.

Excessive intake of carbon monoxide decreases the capacity of blood to carry oxygen. It can cause permanent brain damage, as well as chest pains or heart attacks in people with heart disease.

Physical symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning may include a splitting headache, nausea, vomiting, and lethargy and fatigue. People who believe they could be experiencing carbon monoxide poisoning should get fresh air immediately and call for medical help from a neighbor’s home.
