Atlanta Falcons center Alex Mack has a fracture in his left fibula, according to ESPN, but he is expected to play through the injury in Super Bowl LI against the New England Patriots.
A source told ESPN the injury typically would keep a player out for six to eight weeks in the regular season. Mack suffered the injury in the NFC Championship game two weeks ago.
Mack likely will need a painkilling injection before taking the field.
Mack has said, “I’m playing. Period.” with regard to his availability. Head coach Dan Quinn said a few days ago that he was concerned about Mack’s injury, but was encouraged after watching his limited action in Thursday’s practice.
Mack, 31, a free agent signed prior to this season, has elevated the play of the Falcons offensive line, one reason they’ve made it all the way to the Super Bowl. Mack made his fourth Pro Bowl this season. He’s only missed 11 games in his eight-year career.
