A day care is slated for the longtime site of Olivet “Wee Care” in Easton’s West Ward.

The 40-year-old day care closed in May 2015 after Olivet United Presbyterian Church closed.

Apostolic Refuge Temple bought the church at 1151 Northampton St. and opened in November 2015. Now the new church plans to open a day care for up to 12 children at the site.

The Easton Planning Commission approved the proposal 7-0 on Wednesday. The church needs to clear one more hurdle before the day care can open.

“Good luck with the zoning hearing board,” planning commission Charles Elliott told a church representative on Wednesday.

Plans to convert the church into a homeless shelter fell through.

The Olivet church was founded in 1899 and its cornerstone was laid in 1903. The church’s aging population was dwindling to the point where it could not longer support the upkeep and staff.

Children must be picked up and dropped off at the 12th Street entrance to keep from blocking traffic on Northampton Street. Daily hours will be 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Former Easton Area School District Superintendent Thomas Evans warned the church owners that 12th Street is often closed on Friday evenings in anticipation of football games at Cottingham Stadium.

The church said it would work with the city and school district to keep the pick-ups safe.
