SANTA ANA >> As Marvin Bagley III did interviews following Sierra Canyon’s 98-72 win over Bishop Gorman (Nevada) on Saturday, kids stood and begged for his autograph.

“Marvin, can I have your shoes,” one kid asked.

After Bagley’s dominating performance at the Nike Extravaganza at Mater Dei, the junior’s growing fan base was obvious as he scored 43 points, breaking the event’s single game record of 41 set by Gorman’s Shabazz Muhammad in 2012.

Bagley added 14 rebounds, three blocks and dazzled with dunks along with a fancy behind-the-back assist to Terrance McBride in the second half.

“I put all I have in this game and it shows with my hard work paying off,” Bagley said. “My teammates just gave me the ball and I was in position to score.”

With the smaller Bishop Gorman defenders struggling to guard him, Bagley attempted 22 free throws, making 15. He nearly outscored Mater Dei the first half with 24 points as Sierra Canyon led 47-26 at halftime.

“When you get to play a full game, you can show what you can do,” Sierra Canyon coach Ty Nichols. “Marvin did a great job today.”

Sierra Canyon (23-1) started the game on a 12-0 run and the rout was on. Remy Martin opened the second quarter with a steal leading to a two-handed dunk. Cody Riley finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds in an effective night for the UCLA-bound senior.

Martin finished with 14 points and seven assists while Terrance McBride added 11 points. Adam Seiko led the defensive effort as he helped hold Bishop Gorman’s Chuck O’Bannon, a McDonald’s All-American game selection, to only one made field goal.

It was the second tough assignment for Seiko in a week as the San Diego State signee held Windward junior Jules Bernard to two second-half points on Wednesday after Bernard scored 23 in the first half.

“I always take pride in my defense and not letting anybody score on me,” said Seiko, who had seven points and five rebounds. “It’s just who I am and I love getting down defensively.”

O’Bannon, who committed to USC, finished with four points as Bishop Gorman (14-9) was led by Christian Popoola Jr.’s 22 points and Jamal Bey scoring 21.

Sierra Canyon now turns its attention to its final two games, including the Gold Coast League championship on Thursday. Riley, McBride, Martin and Seiko have never lost a league game in their careers and with Viewpoint on Tuesday, they began to recognize how close it was to crossing goals off the list as seniors.

“That’s a great milestone to accomplish, going undefeated in league,” Riley said. “We want to finish with that and keep it going all the way to the state finals.”
