CLEVELAND, Ohio – Time travel and sports are two of my favorite things to watch. I recently wrote about ‘Frequency’ and its unique take on time travel, and today I will include another current TT show – “Timeless.” And it’s a nice break from current games on television to look at sports history with ESPN’s “30 for 30” documentary series.

Timeless (NBC)

I’m a sucker for time travel, so I got hooked into ‘Timeless’ from the start. Each episode takes a formulaic approach: Good guys get into time machine and go back to a different historical era each week to catch bad guy in the other time machine. Slowly, personal lives come into the decision-making paradox (one character’s wife had been killed and he wants to eliminate the killer before the murder; another alters history so that her ill mom is now well – but she doesn’t have a sister anymore.) The show has found its legs and is traveling at a decent clip. (Here’s last week’s recap, which includes links to each episode. And here’s a look at smart time travel in pop culture.)

30 for 30 (ESPN)

ESPN’s ’30 for 30′ dives allow time to help tell the story. Allow a little breathing room from a topic and perspective becomes clearer. So many interesting ones here. “Elway to Marino,” the retelling of the 1983 NFL draft, is a great one, a beautiful spiral down football’s Memory Lane. The draft produced a two-fold saga that unfolded over time: What team would select John Elway, and why did Dan Marino fall? The soap opera plays out wonderfully, with their mutual agent candidly bringing out his journal from that time. Great current interviews mix with classic photos and old video. The rest of the draft, for football junkies, also is amazing.
