A mother of three young children was arrested Thursday after deputies say she left her kids alone at their Lake Mary home for several days while she traveled across the country.
Naiele Santa Ana Olivas, 29, is facing three charges of child neglect.
She and her children — ages 8, 9 and 11 — had recently moved to Lake Mary from California, according to the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office.
Olivas traveled back to the West Coast on Jan. 8 for “unfinished business” but didn’t make arrangements for her kids and decided to leave them alone, Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Kim Cannaday said.
She planned to return on Jan. 19, which means her children would have been alone for 11 days, an incident report states.
Cannaday said Olivas left food in the house, cash and a phone for them.
“The problem is they just moved into this area, and she left them completely alone to fend for themselves,” Cannaday said. “…She wasn’t going to be gone for a few hours. She was planning to leave them alone for nearly two weeks.”
Olivas told investigators the children’s grandmother was supposed to watch them, but the grandmother said she was “unaware” the family had even moved to Florida, an incident report said.
The 11-year-old, who was left in charge, contacted his grandmother on Jan. 11, and she took the children into her care, deputies said.
The children were unharmed, Cannaday said.
