HOUSTON — Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul has settled his lawsuit against ESPN and reporter Adam Schefter out of court.
Super Bowl 2017: What Giants fans should watch for
Pierre-Paul was suing Schefter and ESPN for publishing an image of his medical records in July of 2015 when Schefter reported Pierre-Paul’s right index finger had been amputated after his hand was severely damaged in a fireworks accident.
A judge allowed the case to proceed in August, denying an ESPN motion to have it thrown out on First Amendment grounds. ESPN announced the settlement, the terms of which were undisclosed and will be confidential, according to The New York Post.
“ESPN continues to firmly believe that its reporting about Mr. Pierre-Paul’s July 2015 injury, including the use of a medical chart that definitively described the seriousness of the injury and resulting treatment, was both newsworthy and journalistically appropriate,” the network said in a statement. “Despite their different points of view, the parties have agreed to amicably resolve their dispute rather than continue their litigation.”
Pierre-Paul’s legal team had no further comment, according to The Post.
Pierre-Paul, a pending free agent, has said he wants to stay with the Giants, but he was clear the team will have to pay up for his return, and give him a long-term deal. The end said he will not sign another one-year deal, and indicated he would not be pleased with another franchise tag tender. He reportedly is aiming for a deal close to teammate Olivier Vernon – five years, $85 million with north of $50 million in guaranteed money.
“At the end of the day, I have a family. We’re going to sit down and think about the process,” Pierre-Paul said. “Football is a game of business. You don’t work for free. That’s basically it. It’s going to be a family decision, and it’ll be my decision at the end of the road.”
