A fire in the basement of a home in the Universal section of Penn Hills has claimed the life of an elderly woman.
The fire broke out at 1:10 p.m. Friday in a two-story home at 2558 School St. Initial reports from the scene indicated firefighters from Penn Hills and Plum brought the blaze under control quickly. The Universal fire hall is a few hundred yards from the house.
Assistant Fire Chief David Zacchia said the unidentified female victim was found outside of the house and attempts to revive her were unsuccessful.
Zacchia said the fire was contained to the home's basement.
Fire marshals from Penn Hills and Allegheny County are on the scene. No cause has yet been determined.
